KEY RESULTS
- Increased annual revenue from $2 million to nearly $4 million in 2.5 years
- Increased headcount from 15 to 22 employees
- Established culture of transparency and accountability
Dawn Kuras, DDS, and her husband, Dustin, are the team behind Nurture Family Dental, a dental practice with more than 20 employees based in Brighton, MI. When they purchased the business in 2016, it was a dying practice — they needed to re-market the business in order to attract new, younger customers. As chief operating officer, Dustin recognized the need for outside business coaching.
Dawn and Dustin quickly achieved remarkable success in turning around the practice, already exceeding the revenue achieved by the previous owner after just one year. But they understood the need to continue improving and growing. After working with a previous company for business coaching, Nurture turned to 728 Group in 2023. They chose 728 Group and their founder, Charlie Poe, because of his growth mindset and commitment to progress.
“In the time I’ve worked with Charlie, he continues to learn more and more about different ways to help people with their problems and help businesses with their issues,” said Dustin. “He really understands that people are first in any business. To grow a business at scale, you have to have a team that has your back. He’s really focused his efforts on maximizing his ability to work within teams and get the most out of each person.”
CHALLENGE
Developing culture for long-term growth
Dawn and Dustin rely heavily on their leadership team to drive growth for their business. “My wife and I have to set the tone for culture and be there everyday, but if we’re 1A, then our leadership team is 1B,” said Dustin. His goal for coaching was to establish the culture and values that would help everyone in the organization to succeed.
Accountability and transparency are crucial in a small business. With just under two dozen people on staff, any interpersonal issues or lack of trust can cause significant problems for the performance of the organization. 728 Group zeroed in on these relationships, particularly at the leadership level, to ensure that nothing would stand in the way of the practice’s vision and growth.
“Charlie has really encouraged us to be vulnerable with each other and to understand that the leadership team has to work for the rest of the business to work,” said Dustin. “He’s really good from an ownership standpoint, really good at propping us up and reminding the team of the investments that we made in them and how much we believe in them.”
SOLUTION
Radical transparency and ambitious goal-setting
In both one-on-one coaching sessions and quarterly leadership meetings, Charlie pushes the Nurture team to focus on what will deliver maximum value to the organization. Rather than rely on templates and repetitive exercises, Charlie is able to react in each session to the pressing needs of the business. Dustin appreciates the flexibility: “In one of our leadership meetings, we had whiteboard out our goals for the day. We ended up not touching any of those goals because Charlie took a left turn and focused on a problem that he identified. This opened up a whole can of worms, in a good way, that really exposed some of our weaknesses as a leadership team.”
Building off that discovery, Charlie encouraged Dustin and his leadership team to be transparent with each other about broken commitments. With 728 Group at the helm, that leadership meeting allowed Nurture Family Dental to finally uncover and address long-standing interpersonal problems that were holding the business back. “In that exercise, we uncovered something between two of our leaders that had been unexpressed and unresolved,” said Dustin. “The session got it out there, helped to clarify where everyone stood, and allowed us to resolve it over the next few weeks.”
Importantly, 728 Group’s support doesn’t end when a session is completed. Charlie meticulously tracks the commitments made by his clients, following up to ensure they’re on the path to success. “He continued to follow up with me to make sure everything was cool and that I was having the right conversations with people,” said Dustin. “It’s not like he’s just in for one day or that he’s charging extra billable hours or anything. That’s the Charlie package right there.”
RESULTS
Sustainable growth and reduced stress
The numbers speak for themselves. In the time that Nurture Family Dental has worked together with 728 Group, the practice has increased revenue by 50% in two consecutive years. The practice is on target to exceed $4 million in annual revenue — more than 6X what the business brought in when Dustin and Dawn bought it.
“Charlie’s very good at making sure we’re making the right moves at the right time,” said Dustin. “We’ve got metrics that we track, and he’s aware of those metrics. We’re able to determine when it’s the right time to start pulling different levers to make sure that the right seats on the bus are filled.”
While revenue growth is nice, Dustin believes that the biggest benefit has been to their quality of life. 728 Group provides both Dawn and Dustin with the sounding board they need to overcome their problems and continue working towards their larger goals. “Charlie has done so much to help us build and shape this leadership team — a team that is super qualified and ready to take on the day with heart, with care, and with empathy,” said Dustin. “It’s huge for us. Outside of our kids, this is the most important thing that we have in our lives.
“I couldn’t put a number on the quality of life improvement we’ve had because of him,” concluded Dustin. “It’s exponential.”
